The training route usually takes four years, starting at Level 2. Throughout it you'll be required to do independent study, placements, supervision and personal therapy. CPCAB publishes the full progression route on its website.
No. Level 2 is designed for people with no prior counselling training. Many students come from care, teaching, HR or no related field at all.
Only if you already hold a recognised Level 2 counselling skills qualification. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll work it out with you as substantial prior experience can mean you enrol through a Recognised Prior Learning route.
You are not alone in feeling that way, and you need not worry. We keep it in mind when delivering our courses: every learner has a personal tutor and regular tutorials to make sure they're on track, plus plenty of resources to help with building your portfolio.
Bring your certificates to the interview. Recognised CPCAB or equivalent qualifications usually let you join at the next level up.
You'll be taught and supported by two tutors. You're expected to attend a weekly class and take part in group and paired activities and discussions, alongside writing a weekly learning review on topics covered.
All sessions are delivered in-person.
Assessment is 100% internal, in the form of a portfolio of evidence which you'll build across the course with your tutor's support - there are no written exams.
Deliberately small; no more than 12 learners per group. Capping numbers is how we keep individual feedback and enough practice time for everyone in the room.
Not at Levels 2 and 3. From Level 4 onwards personal therapy is required alongside your placement.
Yes. We understand that training can be a big financial commitment, so we offer flexible instalment plans to spread the cost.
CPCAB are a specialist awarding organisation who design and award qualifications in counselling and related subjects. The BACP is a professional organisation representing the interests of the counselling profession, with a role in setting standards and registering counsellors and supervisors.
You'll need a supervised placement with real clients in Level 4. We'll support you through this process including preparation for agency interview.
You will be invited to an informal interview. It's how we check the course is right for you before you commit and gives you the chance to ask us any questions.
